Summer Activities in Spokane

Wondering what there is to do in Spokane this summer? You’ve come to the right place! Whether you’re in you’re twenties looking for adventure, have young kids, or want to relax while your teens or grandkids are enjoying the excitement of summer, Spokane has lots of activities for you.

Hiking in Spokane

Summer is a great time to get outside and enjoy the outdoors. There are lots of great places to explore in Spokane.

Iller Creek Conservation/Rocks of Sharon Hiking

Some of the best views found in Spokane can be found in the Dishman Hills Conservation area. Hike the Iller Creek Trail head starting in the Dishman hills area or try going in from the back side at the Rocks of Sharon Trail head (short hike, better for kids) off of the Palouse Highway. You won’t be dissapointed. At the top of the trail you can see for miles. On a clear day (which is most of the Summer in Spokane), you can even see Steptoe Butte towards the South.

Deep Creek Canyon Hiking

Want to do some exploring near the Spokane River? Deep Creek Canyon has a lot to offer. If you follow the creek bed all of the way you’ll run into the Spokane River and sections of the Centennial originating near Riverside State Park. Want a bit more excitement? There are some great areas to rock climb in Deep Creek if you’re up for a challenge.

Mt Spokane State Park

Although known as one of Spokane’s best winter destinations, Mt. Spokane also has plenty to offer in the Summer. Enjoy hiking to the Vista House for Views of Spokane, Coeur D’ alene, Hayden and more. Or explore the cross country ski trails and enjoy hiking through the lush forest with glimpses of mountains beyond.

Spokane Aquatic Centers

Looking for a way to keep young ones entertained on hot summer days?

This year, Spokane Parks and Rec is offering free aquatic passes for all of the city aquatic centers. Check out a pool near you. Lots of the aquatic centers are hosting fun events for kids on a daily basis. For instance, the Witter aquatic center has an inflatable fun run that looks a lot like something you might see on the Wipe Out TV show. The Fun run is available on Tues/Thurs/Sat. 1-4 p.m. Check out Spokane Parks and Rec for more info on Acquatic centers and events.

Spokane Movies in the Park

Just want a fun way to relax in the evening? Spokane’s Movies in the park are back on Wednesday evenings throughout the summer. Enjoy free, family friendly movies in the park including: The Wizard of Oz, Ralph Breaks the Internet, and Toy Story. While your there for the movie, enjoy popcorn and pizza from local vendors.

Enjoy Riverfront Park

Riverfront park has undergone numerous revisions including the addition of the Ice Ribbon and the modified Loof Carousel. During the Summer, the ice ribbon is open for Roller Skating. They also have bungee jumping available for kids to enjoy. If you’re not hanging out at the skate ribbon, there is plenty to enjoy at the park from a stroll alongside the river to a Gondola ride over the iconic Spokane Falls.

Kayak the Little Spokane River

Want something a little more exciting? Try Kayaking sections of the Spokane and Little Spokane rivers. Try paddling the Little Spokane River from St. George’s to Nine Mile and catch a ride on the Little Spokane River Shuttle back to your car.

Looking for something more advanced? Sections of the Spokane river are kayak-able based on your experience. The section between Mirabeau Park and and the Islands Trail head (directly below Arbor Crest) is quite fun in mid-to-late summer. (*recommended for experienced paddlers only)
